No one has ever told me to vent on yams before in my life! I'm so happy you gave me the opportunity and I shall take advantage of it. I'm so happy.... :D
Yam is the common name for some species in the genus Dioscorea. There are several different kinds of yams. African yams taste a bit different than the rest, but they can be used for things just the same. They are the famous food of the yachawiki tribe of western Asia, a delicacy. They are served with other dishes such as fernapew and riganeroos.
One yam that is particularly famous was nicknamed Ricky the Yummy Yellow Yam. It will remain a mystery as to why Ricky wasn't named Sam or Lenny, or even Tanner. Well, Ricky invented the candied yam, as well as traveled to Italy and The Great Salt Lake (pictures of these trips can be found by searching Google). Ricky is currently employed by the NFL as a water boy, and occasional substitute quarterback.
A good recipe for yams is as follows. Too bad you're allergic, eh?

6 large bright orange sweet potatoes
1 lb. dark brown sugar
1 stick of butter
2 cups of miniature marshmallows
1/4 cup of white sugar
2 teaspoons of salt

Wash and peel potatoes. Chunk potatoes into 2 inch disks. Put potatoes in a pan and cover with water. Add 2 teaspoons of salt and 1/4 cup of white sugar to the potatoes and water. Cover. Boil until potatoes are fork tender (approximately 30 minutes). Drain potatoes.

Put potatoes in a baking dish and sprinkle with brown sugar. Dot potatoes with butter.

Bake for 20 minutes in 350 degree oven. Sprinkle with marshmallows. Return to oven and bake until marshmallows are brown.

Well, that's about the extent of my knowledge about yams. Hope that's enough for ya!

I like yams myself. I like them mashed or baked either one. I guess it's a personal preference.
Merry Christmas!~~
