Talk to your doctor.

To me, it sounds like your daughter could have ocd (obsessive-compulsive disorder), and she could be what they call a "picker", which is a victim of the disorder that picks at skin, bites nails or pulls out hair. It is a compulsion, and one that can't be helped. Some develop the condition due to trauma, but most are born with the disorder, with it rearing its ugly head sometime during life. Your doctor can better explain it to you.

It might also be stress (but it would have to be pretty severe for one to react in such a way). Speak to your doctor, and find out who you need to take her to/what you need to do. The sooner you catch and treat it, the better she will be in later life.

Good luck!!

my daughter has very long hair...and i can't remember how old she was when she started it but we would go in and check on her in the middle of the night and she would have a big hunk of her hair in her mouth..lol it was so gross. it would be all wet and knotted. she's 3 now and has not done it for a while, but i thought maybe she was just bored before she fell asleep and thought it was fun. now, if your daughter is actually pulling her hair out of her head to chew on it, i would call her ped, and see if an appointment is needed. it could just be a phase.

The condition is called trichotillomania. Many of these conditions (self-mutilation) are caused by unresolved emotional issues. If you can resolve the underlying emotional issue, then the behavior may stop. My daughter will sometimes pull her hair when she is tired, but too irritated to sleep.

Well, the condition is called trichotillomania....but it's rare in a child that young. It's usually a symptom of OCD in an adult. She sounds like she's either stressed out? or maybe her head is itchy/hurting in that spot for some reason??

The best thing to do is call your pediatrian's office and talk to either the nurse your the doctor. They can give you suggestions on how to helpo her not do it. Or they might suggest you to take her to a specialist.

Shave her head. A hat won't work.

Then take her to a doc and see if she is deficient in her diet or something.
