Pardon me if I sound offensive. But aren't they just a big waste of money. Your putting a dead person in it. Then your burying them in the ground. Mostly likely never to be seen again. So why do we waste are money on coffins.?

Not really, occasionally I find them comforting, and almost rejuvenating for a few months.

First of all, some people wanted to protect the corpse from bugs, and vermin and rot, oh my. Neither the AIDS virus nor Hepatitis viruses can survive in a dead body, much less until they are interred. This is taught in high school biology. In some states, funeral directors require less training than licensed cosmetologists. As the previous poster's citation pointed out, the funeral industry is horrendous in their predatory behavior towards the grieving family. The industry is also quite defensive and spends a fortune on lobbying to protect their business.

Now they do it for a big show at the funeral service. Yes funeral directors make a fortune on other people's feelings. CORRECTION: FUNERAL HOME OWNERS ARE THE MONEYMAKERS, NOT NECESSARILY THE DIRECTORS.

Yes. If you look into things, you can rent a coffin for the viewing and then bury in a pine box or cremate.

If you want to read a good expose of the funeral industry, try reading "The American Way Of Death" by Jessica Mitford. It's an educational and entertaining read which may help to clarify some of the regulations and laws surrounding funerals and death.

LOLOL Yep, that dead person will appreciate the coffin he was buried in about the same time he comes up to smell the flowers they put on the grave.

everything that is used for a funeral including the burial plot, coffin, and head stone are paid for and done out of respect for the dead and their religious beliefs. Many of these traditions bring comfort to the loved ones of the deceased more than anything else.

They are simply an upgrade to the already grand illusion. I want to be tied to a tree in the wilderness when I die, let the animals eat at me. I think that would be noble.

I've always thought so too. You should be able to rent them for the funeral home, but why does it need to be buried too? Can't they just dump your body in there? I plan on being cremated anyway.

I believe they are a ripoff! Why pay thousands to put my ole dead body in it that's just going to decay anyway! Just stick my in the cremator and burn me; much cheaper and less messy!

Pardon me if I sound offensive, but from what you are suggesting when a loved one dies to just throw 'em in a cremator and burn 'em. Have you not turned the final disposition of a loved one to an act no more symbolic than taking out the trash?
Isn't about anything a waste of money, if you focus on the final result, as you have here, i.e. putting them in the ground where they are going to rot anyway?
Aren't pets a waste of money? You have to feed 'em and water 'em, take 'em to the vet, and they just end up dying and rotting?

they're hideous and they're such a guilt trip. i don't even know how they came to be how they are today, or why this bizarre custom is so standard. they take up too much space and almost seem like a kind of pollution. i agree.

well, not everyone would like to be cremated, so its necessary to have a quality coffin that does not leak or allow things in or out of it to bury the dead in the ground, other wise, you face problems with contamination from the dead corpses possibly getting those still alive diseases or illnesses. Example : a plague.
