Warm milk is safe and effective. I use it from time to time and it really does work, once you get passed the taste.

when you warm up milk, it activates the chemical trypophan.. the same chemical in that thanksgiving turkey. It'll make you sleepy but it won't keep you asleep.
so yeah, warm milk works for some people.
what works for me is excercise during the day. I've been an insomniac every since i was a kid... I run a couple of miles a day and eat well.. That seems to work.
Oh, booze doesn't work in the long run.

Set up the whole atmosphere to be relaxing. Maybe play some nature sounds, get extra pillow to surround you. Get satin sheets and pajamas, a cup of hot tea with brandy poured in wouldn't hurt either.

What works for me is warm milk, with a couple of spoons of honey. I am not kidding, it actually works.
Also, jasmine tea, Jose Gonzalez CD, tequila gold, etc.
