Because it is or can be a spiritual season, independent of what people are thinking. It's Spring whether we think "budding flowers and plants" or not. Each season is an opportunity. But so as to not quibble with your choice of words and ignore the meaning behind them in your question, let me say that when we focus on the material to exclude the spiritual, that is the real meaning of Christmas, we do not honor the season nor fulfill its purpose. But is that not the case will all Christian holidays? Do you want an Easter bunny and an egg hunt or do you want to ponder the Resurrected Christ?

Not all people think that Christmas is just a season. It's a day for celebrating and remembering the birth of Jesus Christ. Most Christians do not care if they receive gifts, eating or buying. Because Jesus Christ is the gift to all human.

Merry, Merry. I'm spiritual all year, but it is a special time to bring happiness to others. I work in a correctional facility, and the holiday season gives me a chance to help inmates connect with each other. Share their memories, and their sorrows. My family gets together and we have a nice meal, and if we're lucky we have kids present we get to see the look of wonder in their eyes. To me Santa was my first belief in something that I couldn't see, and from that my belief in God grew from that. Yet each year, regardless of how old I am, I listen for the bells on Santa's sleigh on Christmas eve. It's a wonderful feeling to grow older with.

The clash of consumerism is so jarring to what we are told about spirituality and generosity that we are forced to demand more from real life. When real life delivers, we are happy at Christmas. When real life doesn't meet our standards, we go out and buy more stuff.

Some people miss the point. Not all. That has always been the case. The reason why some people miss the point is that they are in flight from the Truth and 'things' have captivated their minds.

Is it wrong to express your joy in the spiritual with pleasures of the flesh? Perhaps it's okay as long as your heart remains illuminated by the "Beacon of Bliss? " Perhaps considerate and conscious enjoyment of the "here and now" is legitimate path to enlightenment.

It depends where you are in the world. To those who have everything, it is probably more about the latter. But to those who do not have much, it can be a magical holiday.
