I have a 3 year old Compaq desktop. Everything was working fine. Powered down one night. Next morning, wont start. Just a green blinking light on the back of the power supply. I disconneted all the periphreals and no changes. So i took off the side and started trying different plugs. The light stops blinking when I unplug P1 from the main board. What does this mean? What is broke and what do I replace?

Get new wires. Make sure they are connected properly to the power supply. Get a new power supply, if that does not work.

Check that the electric socket is ok.

If none of that helps, then you may have burnt your fuse inside the computer. You would have to unscrew the bolts and take a look inside, and you may also find that the motherboard is burned.

If that is not the case, unplug the PC from the socket and wait for a day, then try again, and then seek help from HP.

hope that helps

Power off the system. Disconnect all hard drives and CD-ROMs. Power up the system and go into the BIOS. make sure that the 1st Boot Device is set to floppy. Restart and observe what happens. If the system is functioning properly it should go through the boot process and search for an operating system on the floppy drive. If no boot floppy has been installed you should get an error here.

Just had the same problem. Sounds like the mother board. My system was 8 years old, so it was cheaper to buy a new system. Just have whoever you buy the new one from do a data transfer from your old hard drive and you won't lose any programs or anything.

Is there any display on the screen, when you try to boot up? Any kind of beep codes? What color is the LED on your monitor? Do a monitor self test. How long does the light on your mobo stay on for? more details needed..
