2012 is sometimes claimed to be a year of spiritual transformation (or apocalypse). Many esoteric sources interpret the completion of the thirteenth B'ak'tun cycle in the Long Count of the Maya calendar (which occurs on December 21 by the most widely held correlation) to mean there will be a major change in world order, although there is a distinct lack of evidence from the extant records of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization that they themselves considered this occurrence in 2012 would signify end of the world.

One very special event that will take place in 2012 is the next transit of Venus, during which the Earth, Venus and the Sun are lined up in such a way that Venus will cross the disk of the Sun.
These transits are very rare and only occur in pairs which are 8 years apart, with a gap of over 100 years before the next pair.
The last transit took place on June 8, 2004 and was visible for its entire 6-1/2 hours from England. The next will be on June 6, 2012, and will be visible throughout its entirety from Hawaii - an excellent reason for going there :) Do ensure that you always use proper eye protection when observing the Sun.

Don't know, but I came up with the same approx date on my own without the help of Mayan calendars or other outside sources. It seems that bible prophesy states that when Israel returned to and possessed their homeland, that generation (40 years) would see all of Revelations come to pass, including Armageddon. Well, in the 1973 Yom Kippur war, Israel finally solidified their hold on Jerusalem which I think started the clock ticking. It didn't say that it would happen in 2013, just during the 40 year period. Maybe there is some other event trigger we haven't seen, and maybe 2012 will come and go with nothing happening, like Y2K.

We have been observing your planet for eons and we can say with a fair degree of certainty that in the year 2012, your planet will reach a crisis stage that may cause life to go extinct. Once the carbon dioxide stored in the permafrost is released by global warming, a cascade effect will occur that will cause the oceans to give up the carbon dioxide dissolved in the deep waters of your planet. The levels of carbon dioxide will reach toxic levels in a short amount of time and that will be the end of the current cycle on Earth. In a few million years we will be back to study the next species that dominates your planet even if they are only the descendants of the tube worms that exist at the volcanic vents on your ocean floor.

Here's a bunch of things that will happen...

But 2012 is most known as the year that the Mayans believed that the world would end. But then it would start up the next day....so it's more like the end of an age.

The Maya believed that their world would end on Dec 21, 2012. Of all the dates put forth by prophets and cultures for a doomsday, this is one with an authentic almost eerie feel to it. But what will happen? A global cataclysm is one possibility. I also believethat the earths polarity will change, North will become South and South will become North

Olympics in France. What else.?

Curious, why you wanted to know about 2012 when we are just entering 2007? What is the special significance other than Olympics?

Who can predict about 2012 as to what will happen?

Could we have predicted about 9/11 and world trade centre on the 10 of the month? Or just minutes before it happened? Or, any number of events that took place in history? I just wondered the reasoning for your q.

Calendars were invented by human beings.

The universe does not do anything special based on a date in one of the calendars we invent. Why should it? We do not determine what happens in the universe simply by creating a system of keeping track of the days.

We aren't that important. Thus, nothing that we do in 2012 will have any significance in the rest of the universe, and the universe will not do anything of significance to us.
