You make your website with the most revelance to the subject and as more people visit your site, your site should go up the search lists

The simplest way is to search for whatever terms you want to be at the top at and then look at the content of the first ranking website. Of course, you can't copy the content (by which I mean the code - i.e. HTML, PHP, etc.) as it's probably covered by copyright but see how often the search term appears. Be careful though as even though that site is at the top of the ratings now, if Yahoo, Google or whoever decide they are not playing 'fair' then they and you might disappear from the rankings. You might also find some help pages on the search engine web site to increase your ratings. The number of other sites that link to yours for example is often cited as a factor.

The key is to get other sites that are themselves high up the search engines lists to add links in their sites to your site.

These links are like popularity votes - they tell Google and Yahoo that a trusted web site thinks highly of your site.
Then in turn once you have a good site that is high up the rankings you can add links to other sites you like, and these will get high rankings too.

You need to build the number of inbound links to your site and make sure that the site itself is properly optimized. I'm building some resources here: http://www.richkahmer.com

Hi,

I'm new at this as well, but from what I have read you want to maximize:
1. Inbound Links
2. Use proper META tags (keywords, description, etc) & proper title
3. You may want to use Pay Per Click ads
