You're understanding the problem correctly, but you made one mistake. When your multiplying the unit value of $9.75 by the 9 shirts, don't multiply by 6, multiply by 9.
So, rather than $58, it should be $87.75.

You take 117 and divide by 12:
117/12=$9.75 per shirt
For 9 shirts, you do the following:
9.75x9=$87.75
Nine shirts costs $87.75

math is my speicality well if 12 shirts costs $117 then you divide 12 in 117 and you should get 9.75 and that is what one shirt cost so you take the price of one shirt and times it by 9 shirts so you would take $9.75 times 9 and that is the answer you are looking for which would be 87.75

You take 117/12 = 9.75
$9.75 is the cost of each shirt. Then 9.75 x 9 =87.75
$87.75 is the cost of 9 shirts.

It's a proportion.
12 shirts cost $117 --------> 12 = 117
[I'm keeping the units off for what I hope it more clear to you.]
so....12/117 = ????
Keep the same proportions:
12/117 = 9/x
Solve for 'x'.
x = 9*117/12 = 87.75
So.....9 shirts cost $87.75

Wow you make it so complicated...
If 12 = $117, then
9/12 = 3/4 = .75
Multiply 117 by .75 and you get $87.75
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To check it, get price of one shirt.
87.75/9 = $9.75
Multiply by 12 to see if you get 117 again...
9.75 x 12 = 117 Voila!!!
Why did you multiply it by 6 if you need the price for 9?
58 is wrong for 9 and half a dollar short for 6.
