No doubt your external hardrive will be USB and possibly firewire. Regardless, when you get it you'll hook it up into the proper port and windows should automatically recognize it as a removable hard drive. Once its plugged in it will also tell you the drives letter. Then all you have to do is save your stuff onto the new drive instead of the C:\ (or whatever your internal hardrive is) If you want to copy stuff from your internal hardrive to the external one simply connect the new external drive, a window pops up where you would select 'Open drive and view files' after that you'll get a window that shows whats on your new drive. Keep this window open and then go to the start button and choose 'my computer' after that select the C:\ and then go to where your files are (ex. My Documents) once you find the files you want to move just highlight them, go to edit, copy(or cut to move), switch to your external drive window and go edit, paste. This should do it for you! Hope this has helped you, good luck

I really wouldn't install programs on the external drive. Yes, it's possible, but unless it's physically part of the system, some applications can have issue with not being on the C drive. Instead put your documents, photos, videos, music, etc.. on it and make compressed backups to it from time to time. There's nothing special you need to do. Just drag the files over the drive after you plug it in. It'll show up under My Computer if you're on Windows and it'll mount to the desktop if you have a Mac.

your harddrive should come with all the paraphanalia you need. This will include any software drivers required as well as cable attachments. Read all instructions carefully before installing the hard drive. Once you have the hard drive connected, all you need to do is go to your my computers icon and click, and the hard drive should should there complete with a drive letter. Just copy files and such as you would to a cd or secondary drive. Congrats on the new hard drive and good luck.

I would use the external hard drive for data storage only. keep your application files located on the local hard drive they will run much faster this way...
depending on the size of the local hard drive I would create another small partition for local data storage for the most used documents.
the 2nd partition provides a safe place to store data locally in case you ever have to re-install the operating system. you don't have to worry about backing up data files from the C: drive this way...
