The way I see it is if you already bought him a gift, you obviously picked out something special with only him in mind. For instance you probably didn't just pick up a random, generic gift. Therefore, I would probably give it to him and say something like, "I had picked this out for you and even though we aren't a couple, I still would like you to have it." I think you will feel good about it and also it will lessen the chance of any hard feelings between you. There is no reason to make an enemy out of an ex. You may just meet the love of your life and find out, to your surprise, that he knows your ex!! Wouldn't it be great if an ex told your new love how totally great you are!!
The only reason I wouldn't give the ex the present is if he was abusive to you in any way.
Hope this gives you a different perspective.
Good luck!
There's a brand New Year just around the corner and I hope it brings you happiness.

I'd wait till after to break up! But no, you shouldn't still exchange gifts if you break up before Christmas.

That would be very kind of you, if you broke up with him (ie you dumped him), he will be feeling down and the christmas present would be a great idea to make him feel better. Just make sure he knows its a soul/friendship make-up or he will think you want to get back with him (us guys always think that).
Edit
would that be tim? as in timsgirl? LOL

Hon, you only have to give him the gift if you want too.
When i was in the same situation i waited to see if he still gave me a gift first.

ouch that kind of sucks : \
if you still want to be friends and not be bitter/sour, i think you should give a gift. i mean you two made the best memories ever and what good is money when you had the best memories ever.

It all depends on your feelings towards it. If you two are still friends and cool about the break up, than why not. If it was a horrible breakup and aren't speaking, than no.

Definitely not, especially if he didn't give you one. I would reuse the gift since it's probably nice, give it to your brother/dad or a male friend.

That would pretty much be a no... unless you and he are seeing each other with family, and they don't know the two of you have broken up...
Kinda sucky situation there, but I've been there myself.
