i believe it refers to oprah, and when the shows about to end it has something to do with the stereo type of a female oprah singer is typically fat and when she sings its at the ending of a show signaling the finale

It is a reference to opera. The finale is a solo usually by an overweight singer. So...the show or a story isn't over until the final song, hence the fat lady sings.

Operatic arias called for the leading lady to sing the finale. The singer would have a powerful voice and 95% of the time she'd be fat.

It started in the late 70's when a baseball announcer said it during a game referring to the end of the opera Aria where the last song was sung by a woman dressed like a Viking who happened to be fat

Great question - - I used to know the answer. In the early days of TV, I believe there was a show that always ended with a song by a popular female singer, who happened to be fat. I'll be checking the answers to see if anyone remembers.

from what i understand.. it was a saying takin from the opera.. the last lady to sing was the most popular singer and she happened to be fat... so "IT" is now anything..not just the opera and it aint over till the fat lady sings... which basically means it aint over till its over...
