Suicide rates go down as people are less likely to commit suicide while they are with family.
Depression rates do go up though.
Christmas can be a horrifc time for those of us with depression, it can make you feel very isolated and alone - everyone else appears happy and festive, but our own immense pain doesn't ease. Sometimes it feels hopeless - if you cannot be happy at christmas, when can you be happy? People need to be more sympathetic when dealing with those of us who are depressed - it is an illness that we didn't ask for, and if we could pull our socks up and get better, we would.

The number #1 reason for suicides isn't depression. It's loneliness.
Assuming that the correlation does indeed lead to causation in this particular case, a person's loneliness tends to be magnified two-fold because of the holidays. Christmas for example, is a time for families to get together and to share and exchange gifts. New Years is the same, minus the whole gift exchange part.
You can also take into account seasonal depression. I may be incorrect but I believe winter is the season most people suffer seasonal depression from.
I think it's fairly obvious as to why suicide rates seem to go up over the holidays.

Probably b/c many people feel alone during the holidays. There's many people who don't have family around any more and also who may not have many friends,or no friends at all. The holidays can also be a reminder to some people about the death of someone who was very close to them. It can be extremely hard to celebrate certain holidays when the person who you loved/cared for deeply has passed away. The holdays are a time when you want to be surrounded by the people important in your life...and if you don't have that, sometimes you feel as if you don't have anything...hence the reason,I guess, many people take their lives during the holidays.

Because a lot of people are alone, they get up on Christmas morning to an empty home, they have no presents to open, no stores are open and no one Will call so they speak with no one until the holiday is over. TV and radio constantly reminds them of the holiday and shows people enjoying it with families. They may think about what they have lost or what they have never had and as a result some can't take it

broken hearts get magnified this time of year. not just loved ones, but careers, "position in life," etc. It is a time of reflection and for many who want to put bad times behind, a time of reflection is not a good thing. also, the commercialism gets to people. Why newscasts produce new stories each year on the same old stuff I have no idea. X amount of days left to BUY BUY BUY. Malls are crowded. Malls are open 24 hours, etc. WHO THE HELL CARES!!!! One more thing, the family issues all get magnified as well. There is always one in the family who wants the "perfect" Christmas but the past is just too much to overcome for that to happen.

One of the reasons is it is winter. Another is that for people alone all the lights, decorations and family oriented activities is very depressing and makes you feel as though you are totally isolated and unloved. Another is that if you don't have money and can't buy anything, it makes you feel hopeless. If you have deep sorrow in your life about something and everyone is celebrating, it causes you to feel out of it. If you have lost a spouse through divorce and are not with your family, it is devastating.I could go on but these are some of the reasons.

Deep depression is the cause, and this can be brought on by many circumstances.
The holidays come around the Winter Solstice, the shortest days of the year. The lack of sun makes us feel depressed. Many deaths occur around holidays. The loss of a loved one makes us feel depressed. Economic woes can make us feel depressed.
The depression may be justified, but it is depression nonetheless.
The best natural cure is a hefty dose of laughter.

A lot of people have lost their loved ones and cannot handle the holiday without them. Also, people lose their jobs and other bad things happen to them during this period and they lose hope and think they have nothing to live for and kill themselves.
