It depends on the unit itself, what it is manufactured for. Some use kerosene, some use other fuels. It should say somewhere on it "use X fuel only" Whatever it says is what you should use. Dont try to substitute anything to save a dime!
More than likely its a kerosene heater, but make certain first and once again dont try to use another kind.

If you are referring to those small portable heaters, the majority of those use kerosene.
If you are referring to a larger whole house, oil burning furnace, it will use a home heating oil.... still not diesel fuel.
IN EITHER case.... you need to have some carbon monoxide detectors. Carbon monoxide is a tasteless, odorless gas, released by burning things, kerosene, oil, even wood.... and it is deadly.
I saw on the news, this last week, about a family that was found dead.... carbon monoxide ..... its not something to be casual about. Be Safe.
Here's another little tidbit..... if you live in a manufactured home.... those little kerosene heaters will actually void your warranty, if you use them.
again... Be Safe

What type of heater? Vent free type? You should use only K-1 clear Kerosene. Diesel would no doubt burn but they put alot of stuff in diesel. You should check with your owners manual. If its the Kerosun type you should use only K-1 clear.

you can use either. we ran out on a weekend, the oil company put 10 gallons of diesel in the tank. i asked the service guy about it and he said that kerosene is better than a furnace needed. kero is made cleaner since it can be burned indoors. either will do. good luck, and happy holidays!

you can buy jet fuel sometimes cheaper than diesel, or kerosene, any of them is fine for short periods of time. Long periods, you might develop a head ache.

Diesel is fine to use.... It is the EXACT same thing as heating oil it is just refined a bit more and a higher grade of fuel... Kero is the same as diesel too but it is refined a lot more than deisel and home heating oil... Oh and to colbrannigan... DIESEL DOES NOT EXPLODE!!!!!!!!!! Why do you think a diesel engine uses GLOW PLUGS NOT SPARK PLUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It burns... does not explode!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well it's your main source of heat, thats hooked to duct and vented and all that stuff, you would want disel, but dont use it for a very long time, if you ran out call your supplier ASAP.
Good Luck

Unless it was to save a life I wouldn't use anything that wasn't meant to be used, that's called an accident.
