Hi
Ring the midwife, just to be safe, she'll know what to do but no need to rush into hospital!
When I had my first child (two weeks late) , homebirth, my waters broke at about midnight, I rang the midwife, who said get some sleep while you can ring me when labour starts, which I did. I went into labour about 6 am. 6 hours labour = healthy baby boy! With my second child (3 weeks early), also homebirth, my waters broke Friday afternoon, but pains didn't start till Sunday morning. 45 min labour = healthy baby girl! (She is four now) I was told by my doctor if no labour after 72 hours I'd need to be induced. So she's got plenty of time! Don't let her get bullied into hospital yet if she doesn't want to go. It can take a while for labour to kick in and as far as I know 72 hours is safe, after that the risk of infection increases and she should propably bite the bullet and go into hospital. Homebirth are lovely and if attended by a midwife perfectly safe! Good luck, best wishes to your friend and a Merry Christmas to you! Pat

typically, a homebirth does not need to be transferred to a hospital until the 24 hour mark has hit after the water has broken. even with a midwife attended birth, this is the standard. the reason is that the risk of infection increases at this point.

for the previous posters, a homebirth is perfectly safe~ more safe than a hospital in most cases, where the risk for infection to the mother and babe is exponentially increased. most moms who choose homebirth do so because of all the unnecessary interventions by the medical teams during a birth. provided that the mom is healthy, and the baby is adequately monitored during delivery. home deliveries are much more relaxed and the lower the stress, the better for mom and child.

best wishes for a safe and healthy delivery of her Christmas miracle!

Hello deborah l,

Normally for a hospital delivery, doctors want a woman admitted if her water membrane has broken. Labor should start within 24 hrs. of ruptured membrane. An increased length of time means an increased length of opportunity for infection. She may be having mild contractions already and just not realize it. Looks like she is going to have a Christmas baby :)

Merry Christmas

Someone should be there that knows what they are doing, like a midwife. She has 24 hours until she is at major risk for getting an infection that could spread to the baby. Get her to the hospital now, and it's pretty stupid to have a homebirth without a midwife.

I would call the hospital and go to the hospital, she could get an infection since her water broke hrs ago.Have you been checking for a heartbeat? Sometimes they have to start labor with meds bec. she is not going into labor and her water broke! I don't believe in home births for the simple fact that my brother was a home birth and he lost a lot of oxygen and was dead for some Min's, he is a little slow as an adult. But people that have home births know the risks. I'm related to 2 nurses and my other 2 family memeber are part of a med team

I think she should go to hospital now. The baby could arrive any time after the waters break. Within half an hour is very possible.

24 hours but she should call the midwife. . This is quite common and no reason for alarm. Homebirths are perfectly safe and actually quite wonderful. I hope she has an awesome birthing expereince!
