How do I save final fantasy crystal chronicles?

I bought the game used from gamestop and it didn't come with a book. I can not figure out how to save my game. Do I have to get to a certain level or find a certain object? Please help! Thanks. I've had to start the game over 3 times now and it's getting extremely annoying.

at the world map, push B

then push left or right until you get to the option to save to the memory card that is plugged into your gamecube
