It is not only the Chinese but other places too. Ghandi used to drink his own "first of the day".
Urine, contrary to popular belief is almost always sterile unless someone has a UT infection, contains many useful minerals and is only harmful if recycled in-finitum.
There are many folks who sing the praises of urine therapy and although not something I do as a matter of course, weak urine (if you drink plenty of fluids) is not actually anywhere near as grim as you might imagine.
Dissapointing to see so many people answer out of ignorance rather than knowledge and dismiss your question as being idiot - mind you, a little sad that you also see fit to judge it as "gross" without finding out a little about the facts first :)

Apparently there are people all around the world that drink their own urine. I saw a show about it on Discovery Channel. Yeah, I think its gross too.

I am pretty certain that practice is more often done in certain regions in India, so probably in other Asian areas as well..So yes, some do. (It is believed to be good for Chakra health, and also including other purification benefits in doing such)

Different cultures have different definitions of "gross".
None less or more valid than the other.
I don't know if it's true or not...but as long as they're not demanding you do it... why worry?

I've heard this to be true in some places. Not hard to dismiss, considering that they care for ethical treatment towards animals. Heck, they don't even care about human beings...
