Own whatever part of the problem is yours, if there is no part of the problem that you caused then you are really a mediator. In that case think of both sides, like you said do not get emotionally caught up in it, and try to see how to solve it in a fair manner. Some problems cannot be solved by any one person. In that case, walk away and let the situation take care of itself.

Well, that really depends. If the problem i with a person, like a friend, or a significant other, then I find that its best to go away from them for a couple of minutes, or hours, time permitting, and then sit down and talk about whatever it is.

If the problem is with a situation around you, I find a nice balanace of others and self is the best. I like to have some solitary time to try to think things out, and if that doesnt work, I like to talk to a friend of mine. Make sure that whoever you talk to is trustworthy, and wont tell anyone else. After that, I like to go out and have some fun. Whether thats with a significant other, friends, or whatnot, it will help you just put the thought of what happened out of your mind.

Take a step back and re-evaluate the situation. Take responsibility for your part of it. Then, keeping your feelings in check, do the best thing. Talking to someone helps alot. Whether it is a TRUSTED friend or a counselor it will help alot. Maybe even both. That way you have an impartial person who knows neither of you and you have one to talk to that sees both sides of the problem. Just keep an open mind when both talking AND listening.

The best thing is talk things out if it is that kind of problem, but not when you are angry, it is far better to talk when each person has calmed down...If it is another problem weigh the pros and cons...you could also ask someone you respect and trust to help you out, it helps a lot to just have someone to listen and just let you talk...I hope this helps.

Be calm, and think things through before any decisions are made. The problem won't go away on it's own, it will need to be solved. You can't solve it if you are tense and won't listen to reason. Listen to all applicable solutions, and choose the one that best suits your situation, keep emotions low, you'll save energy that way.
