Well, it is a myth today but wasn't always. A man actually did go down their chimenys and give them toys because he wanted children to celebrate the Christ's birth. But he died along time ago. Parents have just kept up the myth.

The original historical figure that partially inspired the Santa Claus tale was Saint Nicholas of Myra. He was a 4th century Bishop in what is now Turkey. He was well known for his generosity and gift giving.

The second part of the modern Santa Clause story was inspired by the British character of Father Christmas whose story dates back to the 17th century. Father Christmas represented the spirit of good cheer during the Christmas season. He was often depicted as a plump man with a long beard who wore a long green fur lined coat.

The modern version of Santa Claus is a blending of these two characters along with a touch of Dutch and German folklore mixed in.
