I hate it when I'm practically asleep, and I wake up with a gasp because I thought I was falling, but I'm still in the center of the bed. It doesn't happen too often, but it still freaks me out.

Sometimes if you're having a dream that you're not even aware of. If it's a falling dream, and you hit the ground you jerk unknowingly in your sleep and so you become fully awake. I think that sometimes though, it's that your mucles are begining to relaxe and right before that happened they tense up suddenly and you twitch. I hope this helps, Merry Christams!!

I think it's a reaction to a dream you're having. The reaction is physical because you are still partially awake.

It is the transition to the state of consciousness where humans can sleep but still awaken in case of danger. It is a defense mechanism kicking in.
