most cats are never accustomed to water like dogs are at a early age like bathing them and throwing them in water to watch them swim, if a cat from a early age gets use to water it loves it. my sister started bathing her cat when it was just a tiny kitten, it is now 5 or 6 years old and when she says cookie, do you want to bath, the cat gets to the tub before she does. so it is mostly i believe what they get used to

Had a black female lab who hated the water. She even shook when I gave her a bath. The first time I took her to the beach, she went wild after a seagull not realizing she was far out in the ocean. It was low tide and the water was only a few inches until a drop off. Everyone on the beach was laughing as she panicked when her feet were no longer touching bottom. She frantically dog-paddled back to land and the woman next to me asked, "First time at the beach?" She never went in again.
Now I had a cat who would calmly sit in the tub in 6" of water while I bathed him....no matter how long it took. Go figure.

Actually, many cats enjoy water and at least one breed is known to enjoy fishing and swimming. But, it has to be on their own terms - being picked up by two human hands and dunked in a sink full of water is not on the cat's "own terms."
And dogs don't necessary love the water, my dog hates getting a bath.

My cat loves water; the dogs hates it.
The cat positions herself next to the car when I spray wash it; while the dog runs and hides.

Not all cats are afraid of water. I make sure that when my kittens are the perfect age to start using the flea shampoo that I make it a habit of bathing them. That way they get use to bathing & they let them.
