Hi,
In short i would say be sensible. Think twice before clicking and typing. Get a good firewall and antivirus and update them along with windows update.
Check for viruses and spyware weekly and do not shop on unknows websites.
Hope that helps

1. Never give out personal details unless absolutely necessary.
2. Shred all old bank statements, credit card offers and canceled checks. Use a crosscut shredder, strips can be reassembled fairly easily. The vast majority of identity theft occurs from "dumpster diving" not on-line!
3. Never click a link in an e-mail to "verify" your account details or even to log into your banking or other sites. Type the URL in by hand.
Those three things will keep you safer than 95% of the population.

1. Never give your personal information over the internet to someone you don't know. That means, SSN, credit card number, checking/savings account, bank information, address and telephone number.
2. Never respond to surveys, lotteries, give-aways, free-anything.
3. If you have a spam button in your email, use it, Never unsubscribe to junk mail.
4. Only buy from a recognized source: a buyer on eBay with a lot of good feedback and several years of doing business with eBay.
5. If in doubt about a prospective seller or source, check with the Better Business Bureau, not the one on the internet, the national BBB. They have a website and will get a report back to you within hours if you give the name of the business, and where it is located.
there is more, but surely you get the picture.

To start off, never use your real name other then on legal stuff.Never give anyone your name, phone number, and address or birth-date. Just these few can be used to get money in your name not to mention legal documents changed and sent some where else. Keep any personal information off your computer, even with encryption software your not totally safe. Places that use your personal information ask what they do with it when they are done processing it. Do they distroy the hard copies and how.
The three most important pieces of information are your full name, date of birth, address. Try to not give these out unless your sure of who your talking to.

The Internet is not a safe place if you go online without securing your computer. After applying everything listed here you are lowering your vulnerability to almost zero.
Check out the very top of my blog for a link to a site that I feel is very good with the tips they give to secure your system.
