It appears to me to be a combination of frequency and amplitude modulation with amplitude discrepencies equating to volume. Please give me as detailed a description of what we see as possible. Where might I turn to learn more about "reading" audio as computers "see" it?

It's just a bunch of binary data converted to look like an analog pattern.

When computers play music a digital to analog converter must be used. All speakers use a magnetic behind the cone attached to a coil of wire. In order for the speaker to reporduct the sound, it must be in an analog form.

It appears to me you are right on the money. I don't think it's a pure signal. Just google occilloscopes (sp?)
