Baron Von Richtohofen. He flew a world war one tri plane built by Focker. The design of the Focker tri plane came off of a captured Sopwith triplane and was exploited by the Germans of world war one.
In those days when in arial combat if you could prove a kill it was recorded; after five recorded kills you were considered an ace.As an ace you were allowed to pick the colour scheme of your own plane. The red baron chose red.
The baron was credited with eighty two kills but what most people don't know is that a vast majority of his kills were lumbering scout planes, or bombers that could not evade quickly enough. Other kills were observation balloons. These were small dirigible like balloons with one man in it .They were moored to the ground so they would not float away. Other kills were set up by his circus and when the time was good then the red baron came in and made the kill and took the credit.(It might be noted here that Herman Goering was one of Richtoffens circus crew, Goering was an world war one ace as well)
He was eventually killed in a dogfight with a Canadian pilot "Billy Bishop" who was credited with killing the red baron. In recent years though it was proven that Australian troopers were the real killers of the red baron when in trying to outmanuever Billy Bishop he flew too close to the ground and a number of Australians took shots at him. It is believed now that it was one of them that actually killed the red baron.

Manfred Albrecht Freiherr Von Richthofen (May 2, 1892 – April 21, 1918) was a German pilot who is regarded today as the "ace of aces".[1][2] He was an air squadron leader and flying ace and the most successful fighter pilot of World War I, credited with 80 confirmed air combat victories.

Richthofen is also known as "le Baron Rouge", "le Diable Rouge" ("Red Devil") or "Le Petit Rouge" ("Little Red") in French, and the "Red Knight" or the "Red Baron" in the English-speaking world. The German translation of Red Baron is "der Rote Baron", and Richthofen is known by this moniker in Germany as well (although he was rarely referred to as "Baron" in Germany during his lifetime, because Freiherr is the correct title for his level of nobility). Richthofen's autobiography is titled Der Rote Kampfflieger ("The Red Battle Flier").
