my welsh buckskin stallion is has a beautiful dark summer coat, but to keep at his best during the show season he needs to be heavier in condition. what can i feed him that wont cause all those annoying black hairs coming through his body coat? i've kept him away from lucerne, and all molasses based feeds. apparently it is protein that causes it, how do i fatten him up a bit without protein?

try the website http://www.chevalinternational.com/page2.html they have some very very good suppliments to enhance certain colors so that you wont have to worrry about taking out the protein that your horse needs. I use the black-as-knight on my friesian colt and get amazing results.
Good luck :)

There is a feed by Nutrina called Empower. It is a rice bran based feed. It is very high in fat (22%). I am not sure at the moment the protein content but I don't think it is very high, maybe 10%. It is a pelleted feed. Actually, it kind of looks like dog food. My horse will not eat it unless it is mixed in with other feed but he is a very picky eater. It helped put a lot of weight on him. Cracked corn is also high in fat and low in protein. I know corn oil is supposed to be good too but it did not work for my horse. The Empower though did the trick.

Feed quality grass hay and beet pulp. The beet pulp has 10% protein so he wont get as much as he would eating alfalfa hay.

If the coat is going to change, it will. It doesn't matter what you feed the horse. It is a genetic thing, not a food thing.

Use oil. Ya know, the kind you put in your frying pans. Corn oil. It's extremely high in fat, and I feed it to my pregnant broodmares and it throws weight on them faster than anything I know of. It's very low in protein. I would use 1 cup on top of his feed.
