I thought of making a quilt for the next year, and on each square(365) mentioning something special about my child, or making a reference to a happy moment we've both shared in the past. I would prefer something that is more meaningful and sentimental than expensive for monetary reasons, and to express sincerity.

This is kind of the other way around, but, along the same lines. When I was a little younger I couldn't afford a gift for my mother. So I had gone to a nearby salvation army store and bought a small end table for $10. I went home and painted it up, stenciled it with little designs, and on the table top I had laid out pictures copied in color with photopaper on the computer, across the table. It was pictures of me and her together and my siblings and parents together. I then laid down a glass top to the table as a cover to protect the photos. The whole thing cost $20 and she loved it.

Another idea is maybe to make a journal, a nice one that's all covered in fabric and cushion and stain the peices of paper inside to give it a parchement paper effect, and put photos in of your adult child growing up and write little captions in there about the photos. Maybe include things you love about them and are proud of them for. Write a poem in there about the day they were born. All those special things.

Good Luck!

golly, if you were my mother and made that quilt for me, would i cherish it all my life! i'd keep it so nice that i'd pass it down to my children (your grandchildren) so very proudly, right in front of you at a party when they were old enough to appreciate it.

personally, i am giving my son (on CD-ROM) a whole set of pictures of himself, the house i helped him to buy this year, he and his fiance, and all their kids combined. those are happy moments for all of them. they can ask me to print out any of the pictures, and i shall, also framing one or two of them.
