From a first aid perspective, passing out means there is insufficent amount of oxygen in the brain which results in fainting.
OR
passing out means drinking too much grog that affects balance.
OR
Injury (perhaps accidential) to the head that results in unconsciousness or passing out.
Anyway, I have seen in movies interestingly they provide smelling salts to get the victim awake again.

Simple! It means that you or someone is handing something out to other people. Like If I were "passing out" invitations to a great Christmas Party.

Passing out is a natural involuntary safety function performed by the brain. The brain closes down to an unconscious state to prevent any permenent brain damage. Its the same thing when someone is knocked out.
