It isn't a magic trick or anything, because I've had him pick up MY books and do it, or books at the bookstore- he ALWAYS does it right. Basically, he can pick up a book and turn it to any page you tell him to. Just flip right to it. If I say "Turn to page 145" He will open the book right up to it. He is almost never wrong, and when he is by like one page. He does it with books at the bookstore, with my books, his books. He isn't a savant, though he is highly intelligent. What does this mean, what does he have?

No, I pick randon numbers. It isn't a trick because I'll be at at, say, Barnes and Noble, and I'll point to a random book and say "723, or 172, or 86" and he'll do it.

How can he possibly cheat? I point to a random book. Random. And not just once, I can do it ten times and he'll be right every time.

If he has gifted qualities in the visual and estimating area then in theory a person can look at a book and get to a specific page. It is possible but rare.

Try this: give him a page number and get him to find the page without looking at the book, keeping his eyes close. He cannot use his hands to estimate the size of the book.

See what he comes up with. In order to do what he does, there must be some sort of measurement instruments in use; his eyes, hands, the size of the book etc. Eliminate those measurement tools and it should become impossible.....

Not to say that what he can do is not great, but I'm sure that there are tangible reasons mixed in with his unique ability to estimate (visually) that creates his 'gift'.

I am really impressed. I can do that only with my own books, right after leaving the page I have been reading, which is nothing special.
Maybe he has just read so much that he is able to calculate the page because he knows the approximate place in the book or maybe he predisposes you to say one number without you noticing it.

Probably as astounding as a three year old who can play the violin or a ten year old who just graduated from college. And have you asked him what it is that he has such an ability?
