My Mazda MPV 3.0 with about 80 thousand miles won't shift higher than 2nd gear.
With the transmission in "Drive" its shifts up to 2nd. When I accelerate further the engine rpms go up the RED zone but the transmission seems to disengage. I understand that automatic transmissions can experience a "slipping" problem, but I don't have the experience or knowledge to properly diagnosis this problem.
I have done transmission flush and cleaned up the pan and filter, found 2 pointed (tiny) pieces of metal that seems to have broken off from the transmission.

Does anybody know where I can a possible solution to this problem?

Thanks!

Sorry. I did not mention earlier that it is a Mazda MPV '98 model.

If you have found actual metal pieces its a good chance thats the reason why you have lost all other gears. Once you experience broken pieces in the trans pan usually you have to rebuild or replace the trans. Good luck with that one.

Sounds like it is time for a rebuild. If I'm not mistaken, the Mazda 3.0 combination is the same used in the Dodge Caravans. They were notorious for these problems. If you have a four-speed automatic, you are probably looking at $2000-$2500 for repair.

Make sure you really love it before committing. After the rebuild, you can plan on another one within the next 50,000 miles.

Ironhand recommended a reputable transmission place. Keep in mind that "reputable" does not refer to the size of the ad in the Yellow Pages. Try to get a referral from someone you trust. Just don't hold it against them if you get burned.

You don't tell us what year.
Does the "O/D" light flash?
Is the car newer than 1996? If so, ask the nice folks at the local discount parts store if they will retrieve the diagnostic codes. If there are any present, write them down, and go here----->

…for a description of the code, and POSSIBLE action to take regarding the repair.
If it is indeed a transmission code, I recommend that you seek assistance either at the dealer, or a REPUTABLE transmission repair facility.

Good Luck and Merry Christmas

my car was doing the same thing a few months ago, and everywhere I took it said I need a new transmission, but I had like 180K miles and it was a '95 merury tracer so I just got a new car. New transmissions are EXPENSIVE so it all depends....

I think it is time for a transmission rebuild (geez, I hated to say that on Christmas Eve).

Do you have a powertrain warranty? A lot of those cover up to 100,000 miles.
