Kuni, my guinea pig, is a really sensitive little guy. I've tried almost everything humanely possible! Staring him down, food bluff, water bluff, even the bathtub thing won't work! Kuni is driving me KRAZY!

One day as I pulled into my friend's driveway, she handed me Gracie, her guinea pig, because it kicked over and broke a mug while she was trying to bathe it. The poor thing was definitely
traumatized and I had never raised a guinea pig before. I had
had a couple of dogs in the past and raised a baby squirrel, but never a guinea pig. I placed Gracie in a big wooden box with shredded newspaper and she ran around the box constantly or
backed into a corner from exhaustion. I always spoke in a soft
cooing voice like you would talk to a baby even if I were in the kitchen or passing within voice range of her so she could get to know my voice and get up very close with my face so she would also recognize me and would slowly extend my hand to try and
lightly stroke her, which was hard sometimes, due to her mistrust and running away. She never once tried to bite me because I did not threaten her in any way. Long story short, the more I did this, the more she trusted me and after only a week we were on good terms and I was able to pick her up without any fuss. I also learned that they purr when happy and contect. Gracie lived for 8 yrs with me and I still miss her.

Guinea pigs are prey animals, so they are naturally scared. First and foremost, get him a same sex or neuterd friend. Being alone only makes them feel more scared. See www.petfinder.com to adopt one near you, don't go to a pet store. In the meantime, start by hand feeding some vegetables. You want him to associated you with something good: food. Also, how big is his cage? For one boar, he needs 7.5 sq feet of space. Living in a small cage will only make him feel more insecure. See www.guineapigcages.com to build him a cheap but necessary cage. Does he have any hidey houses? Part of him trusting you is that he needs to feel safe himself. They love to hide naturally, so having different hidey houses around the cage will make him more confident.

Good Luck!

My daughters guinea pig is very shy and rarely comes out of the hutch unless he sees his girlfriend. I read an article by an expert in guinea pigs that you should sing softly to shy and sensitive guinea pigs. Try that. Good luck.

Give your Piggy time! Very rarely do we people automatically trust someone we don't know,or understand. Keep trying the food bluff. Give him more attention than you think he needs. He eventually will come around.

Play with it, handle it etc etc in time it will come to know you and endure your prescence. Either that or you have a psycho piggie, keep all garden tools locked away.
