My daughter is 2 weeks old, and about two days after we braught her home she started to get congested. I have taken her to the doctors and they said she looks really good. I was wondering is she too young to be allergic to dogs? I am going to call on tuesday, but was wondering what everyone else thought.

It is entirely possible for her to be allergic to dogs or a number of other things. Both of my boys have been allergic to animals from the beginning. But you can't have them formally tested until they are 5 yrs old. If you have dogs and want to keep them (because I have one) then I recommend the hypoallergenci shampoo for dogs that you can buy at your vet's office. Bathe your dog at least once a week and that will cut down on the allergy problem. My boys don't have problems with our dog since I started doing that about 3 yrs ago!

Whoa--that might not be avoidable. Allergic reactions get stronger with each subsequent exposure (like the 1st time you are stung by a bee, you're NOT allergic, it sensitizes you, the second time you're stung, you have reaction, 3rd time, you have a reaction, and every time after that the reaction gets worse and worse.) With a dog, the baby will just get more and more allergic to it as time goes on. The baby could get VERY ill with asthma or have super bad systemic reactions. Beagles also are a high potency allergen dog. I had a baby brother who was allergic to our Boston Terrier. Once he had to go to the hospital (6 mos' old) by ambulance because he was turning blue he had asthma so bad. On top of that, when the ambulance came, they couldn't get the stretcher in the front door because my friends and I had built a humogous snow man on the front porch. Back to the dog and the baby--they probably have to rehome the dog, and clean all their furniture, carptet, mattresses and clothing. My mom got new carpet, because it was wool, which also was an allergen. Kids allergic to dogs can have some pretty serious, life threatening reactions and side effects.

If she isn't breastfed, she is much more likely to be allergic to her formula than your dogs. However, if you want to lower her general allergen load. Run all her bedding through the dryer on hot for 20 minutes. This will de-activate any and all allergens. I would put a humidifier in her room as a lack of humidity can cause congestion as well. (I put vicks vapor rub on a cloth near my kid's face one to help out with it too, while they were sleeping in my presence of course) Ban the dogs from the place where she sleeps. She may also just be experiencing her first of many colds. All of which last (viruses as a whole) from 10 to 14 days.

Happy mothering! Merry Christmas!

Yes it is likely that she could be developing allergies to dogs. Ask your baby's pediatrician and/or the dogs vet for some ideas on what you can do, if anything. I am not too sure about these things!

yes, she could be developing allergies...but it's also a known fact that kids that are exposed to animals like cats, dogs, birds....they don't have allergies like we do!
maybe it's a good thing that you're exposing her...she's just not used to it is all.
good luck!
