There have been studies about sleep patterns of all ages, but teenagers had the most interesting results.
The harmonal imbalance seems to affect the sleep pattern. Teens are nocturnal. They don't want to go to bed at a "reasonable" hour and don't want to get up early. It's not laziness and not just the results of staying up late. It can be controlled by self dicipline. You can drag yourself out of bed at 7 AM (whatever time school requires) and you can go to sleep at 11 PM.
The studies show teens normal clock would have them in bed around 3AM and out of bed around 11 AM. On this sleep cycle, teens are much more alert throughout their waking day. Rather than forcing conformity, the schools might "think outside the box" and adjust the school schedule to better match the adolescent sleep pattern. School starts at Noon and releases at 7:30 PM. Homework and socilalizing until 3 AM and off to sleep.

Sleep apnea can cause that. It is when you quit breathing while you are sleeping and it wakes you up. You usually don't even remember waking up. This can happen several times during the night causing you to not get a good nights sleep, therefore, you have a hard time waking up in the morning. I good indicator that you may have this is snoring.

In our house it's called sleep exhaustion. Get to bed earlier, try to get eight hours!! For teens, it's a biochemical change in their brains that make it hard to fall asleep and hard to wake up.
Seriously, look at schedule, look at diet, look at amount of sleep, exercise and caffeine. If those don't match up, then call your doctor. A medium sized apple provides actually a special energy that gives you more get-up-and-go than a cup of coffee. I don't have the citation but I read that about a year ago in Nature magazine.

I don't think that there is a medical thing. I do know that it takes practice to get up early in the morning and stay awake. I used to put my alarm clock on the other side of the room, and keep my room cold at night. In the morning, the alarm goes off, I have to get out of bed to turn it off, and freeze my butt running to the clock and back to bed. It usually woke me up. Good Luck!!!!!!
