I would have to say Sam, because all of the other characters--even Frodo-- are "chosen" because they have some special gift or power, or because they are the greatest representative of their kind. The Elves of Mirkwood send Legolas because he kicks ***; Gondor sends Boromir, their mightiest warrior and heir to the stewardship. Even Gandalf is, of the Istari (wizards), the greatest and wisest of the Five who come to Middle-Earth.

Sam, on the other hand, is a gardener. He isn't chosen to be a Ring-Bearer like Frodo is (though in the book, he does carry the Ring for a short time after Frodo's capture in Cirith Ungol). He's not cut out to be an adventurer, and probably more afraid than anyone. But it's his utterly selfless loyalty and friendship, made MORE powerful by the fact that he's a helpless civilian in a world of 20th-level fighters, that turns him from an everyday buffoon into a hero.

I mean, what kind of friend would you want to be seen with? Sure, Aragorn. He's a badass, and people would think you were cool for hanging out with him. But you know that Sam's friendship would run deeper. He'd walk from one end of the world to the other for you, and never expect anything in return. He may not be the best example of the heroes who save Middle-Earth...but he's the best example of why it's worth saving.

Gandalf. He dies. He comes back. Not for reward for a life well-lived. He's sent back because he has a bigger part to play. He never asks about his survival, and he knows that he will not survive the war of the ring. Not in the whole, unscathed way. His life goes to all Men, Elves, Ents, Wizards, and Hobbits. He carries his love quietly. It is with a burning passion that he cares for his hobbits. Yet, he is quiet, he watches, he listens.

He truly is Gandalf the White.

I have lots! it's pretty close between Aragorn and Sam.

Aragorn is noble and brave and kicks serious *** and after reading all that stuff with him and arwen i kinda want to marry him. I think he was probably my favorite in the books.

In the movies it was probably sam, and here's the thing, FOTR and TT i totally hated sam because he seemed more like frodo's lover than frodo's faithful servant. But in the ROTK when frodo sends sam back, i cried. Sam is amazing.

Legolas. I've always loved elves. They're whimsical, with a deep fondness for music. They love silver more than gold, they're light and swift, they have incredibly keen eyesight, and are really fast and accurate at archery and swordfighting... And how cool was it in the Fellowship that Legolas was walking on like four feet of snow?

Smeagle/Gollum...

Why? He is the most conflicted character, both internally and externally. Vilified by most, pitied by a few, but never understood by anyone. And destined, through his madness, to save the world and unmake the One Ring.

He is far and away the most complex character in the books... the others being pretty much archetypes...

Oh - I should mention that for me this applies to both the books (brilliantly written character) and the movies (brilliantly acted, brilliantly animated, brilliantly directed and brilliantly voiced...)

Aragorn, because he is such a noble character. He is human and he has weaknesses, but he knows he's weak and despite that he tries to be the best man he can be while remaining humble.

legolas, he's got pointy ears and can mount a horse in aa really cool way if you're talking about the film. If you mean the book, then i'd have to go with aragorn, obvious reasons - KING

Legalas because he is an elf and can use a bow and stuff. and is an elf. I love elves, as you can tell. I dont care about the fact that in the movies, he is Orlando Bloom. that just makes one very bad FAULT, not advantage.
