Believe it or not I have a goldfish that we call trooper because I took my daughter to the fish store and she wanted the (feeder fish) and this fish wasnt even 1 inch and he is now about 4 inches and FAT and has lived about 6 months now, I think if the fish are for your child then get goldfish and you will eventually have a few that will live a long time and they are cheap. We call him trooper cause he outlived about 8 other fish and he keeps on ticking. ( Just so you know over feeding can make the tank nasty and kill the fish and also too many fish in the tank will also kill the fish.)

A 10 gallon can barely house anything. I am sorry, but there are some dumb people up here. BIG NO NO'S: Glowfish 6+, 10-15+ gallons Mollies 3+, 20 gallons (for 3) Swardtails 3+, 20 gallons (for 3) Corydoras 3+, 20+ gallons Goldfish 1 baby needs 15-20 gallons PERFECT FOR A 8 GALLON: 4 female Betta's (buy from a display aquarium with an established sorority) or 1 Dwarf Puffer or 4 guppies (1 male, 3 female) or 1 male Betta, 2 ghost shrimp or 3 platies Not many fish at all can be in a 8 gallon. I highly suggest 1 dwarf gourami (I have one in a 10 gallon alone), or 4 female Betta's.

I got a regular goldfish from a carnival and it has lived over three years and has grown huge! He changes from gold to silver every few months and back again. Pretty hardy fish, also the kind with the huge bug eyes are pretty hardy as well. If you keep the tank and filter clean and don't use tap water, they should live a long time. An aquarist friend told me that the life expectancy of a gold fish is 40 years...

If you can't seem to keep anything alive for more than a month, it seems pointless to even buy new fish. Why are they dying, have you done your cycling? is the tank overstocked? is there a heater in the the tank, a filter? you need to answer all these questions before you should buy new fish.

if you want hardy fish...put in some sharks.
i would suggest the rainbow shark because it is not that agressive as the others.you could pu 2-3 in a 15 gal.
red tail black shark - you could put 1-2 in a 15 gal.however i really think you should only keep 1.

if you want a community tank try tetras.
cardinals, neons and glowlights are the best.
you could put 15 of any kind in a 15 gal tank.

put on only kind of shark in a tank as they tend to be territorial.
and don put fish 3cm+ if you want some tetras as other bigger fish think of them as food.

koi fish and goldfish are good for a pond.

Since your like a beginner..u should go ahead and get some gold fish..really easy to take care of..if you want to take it up a noch...buy black mollies, platties, and guppies..they all like each other..they need about a 20 gal and up..and are all LIVE BEARERS like us..they give birth to kids alive..and..NO EGGS..and be sure to give your plants LIVE PLANTS..it filters the water and give them algae to pick at.

Gold fish are hard to kill and they can get big. be careful about mixing them with other fish though, goldfish do something weird to their water that can make it bad for the other fish.

Try platty's and mollies. They are cheap and seem to live a long time for me. My platties have gotten quite large also. Guppies are also cheap and easy to care for but are smaller and dont get very big...well, my female did, but she is the only one.

save your money... do a little research on maintaining an aquarium and the need of certain fish... they'll live for years if you do that.
