Receptionists are frequently like co-ordinators. They connect visitors (walk-ins) and telephone callers with relevant employees of the company. Sometimes they are asked to type out forms, letters, etc. The more a receptionist knows about the business and its people the more of an asset s/he is to the company.
Personally, I think this person has a very important role because s/he gives outsiders a first impression of the business.

Receptionists are very underestimated. Most offices would fall apart without a good receptionist to keep things in order.

They are the gateway to whatever organization they work for. They can either be a great 1st impression by would be clients/customers or run ppl away if they are not professional.
Also they are the keeper of the communication flow. They are the 1st valve, if you will, for the pipeline of verbal information that goes in and out of any office.

That it's really hard -- you have to deal with the public, and it can get really frantic, since there are times you have to deal with 50 things at once.

I've done some reception work, and it can be really hard, depending on how high traffic the office.
