Has anybody here done sonography? I'm getting ready to start college and I'm thinking about going for an A.S. in radiography and from there doing sonography. Any good stories? ...bad experiences?

Does anybody have any good stories or bad experiences from being a sonographer?

I haven't done sonography, but have had sonography done to me. Sounds silly, but I had a great time. The hospital had gotten a new sonogram machine and the company rep was there to train the personnel on it. The new machine gives a much much better image on the screen. I actually recognized my own organs (not that I open up to look LOL!) The pancreas is really a trip to look at. Kidneys, liver, spleen, gall bladder, uterus, bladder, etc. I'm lying down and they are having me roll all over the exam table as the rep is showing them how to check blood flow (is the blood oxygenated enough? etc.) in the liver. They even checked out my one remaining gall stone (used to have two and yes I know when it left!). I got to put in my two cents worth every once in a while. Pretty soon there were like ten people in my cubicle, the rep, Charge Nurse, and seven trainees, That rep was soooo good I had the feeling I could run the thing. She even answered my questions and we got to check out my internal stitches and scaring from the surgery.

When I visited my Doctor later, he told me I had been the hit of the party. The rep was glad I put my two cents in 'cause my questions were relevant and brought up some things that ordinarily would not have been covered.

I was only supposed to have my liver looked at, but because I was such a willing subject that contributed to the better education of the nurses at that facility, they gave my Doc the whole session and only charged for the liver scan. Very very good experience.

I hope you become as good as these people were, it would make the whole experience easier on the patients. Good luck with your education.

Sorry -- you might have better luck with this question in another category. (After all, this is the Pregnancy question -- you're looking for career advice, not baby advice.)
