santa is based on St Nicholas. There is very strong evidence that St nick does exist. if you do a search on yahoo it'll give you all the info on the various things that st nick has done which lead to the attributes of santa claus

While there is NO santa claus, there WAS a man named Nicholas that was later made a saint by the catholic church hence the name "St.Nick". He was a lover of Christ and showed his love by spreading the gospel thru the giving of gifts.

The idea of Santa Claus makes him real to children, but realisticly, no. Though, Saint Nicholas was real.
