I think it's 2 things.... one, people want to be politically correct to a degree & nice and two, because people buy into advertising & what's in 'vogue' too much.
In the 1800's (or so) a tan was considered "common" in the sense that people who worked in the fields or did some other outdoor manual labour were of a lower class. So pale meant wealth.
I think since after WW2 the attitude shifted to where if you had a tan it meant you were able to afford vacations to far off sunny destinations, therefore tan equalled some money.
In the '70's the majority of models in magazines had tans from the 'ad fantasy' of being in the French Riviera.... it seems to me that since then the mentality is still there even with skin cancer warnings.

Baking your skin is so not worth it... ladies my age that tanned since their teen years look at least 15 years older than me now... crows feet, sun spots, freckles and sagging due to elasticity damage.... I avoided the sun because of eye sensitivity and I burned easily....and I'm told I look 5 years younger than my real age.

Personally, I like whatever someone is born with... no alteration.
Pale is pretty and dark is delicious.
Accepting yourself is key... even if it takes a couple of decades.
That's what I think.
