Let a= width of rectangle.
Let b = length of rectangle.
[If the shape is a square, then the sides are the same; so, a = b.]

The Thm. has been given before:
a^2 + b^2 = c^2 [c represents the diagonal or hypotenuse]
Solve for "c", as others have shown:
c = square root[a^2 + b^2]

Ex. A rectangle with length 3cm & width 4cm. The diagonal will be:
c = sq.rt(9 + 16)
= sq rt(25)
= 5cm

Pythagorean theorem....Add the square of the length and the height of the rectangle together. Then take the square root of the answer. That's it. In the case of a square (where all sides are equal, it is the square root of twice the square of any side. Simple.
