One year my former employer planned our Christmas party and the Hotel in which we were staying was not far from what is called Amish Country. Those of us who wanted to could go in town and have lunch at this Amish restraunt. At first we were all like really not sure what to expect. We all had this picture of how it was going to be. But once we got there it was totally different. People were not walking around in Amish "gear" so to speak. Some of the older ones maybe but not all. The cheese is really good and we had fried chicken, mashed potatoes, beef, bascially the same food everyone else eat except it suppose to be i guess natural in some way but it tasted the same to me. People rode motorcycles and bycicles just like anyone else. So I think alot of what people believe is a myth or at least how it used to be. Oh and the cheese is awsome.

Ok, all too true- but I do know some... there's a lot that gets swept under the rug (prob more than in your average community). That said, there's also some very nice ones around. The "don't judge a book by its cover" truism applies- they are not as innocent as they look... and also, they are rapidly changing- there are many, actually, who have computers now- they have solar panels on their roofs and convert it to electricity... and have all kinds of goodies...and, sadly, drug use is rampant among the young people in the place I know...
*edit* re the electricity thing- they're trying to avoid 'worldliness' (so they generally don't tap into public sources) but are permitted in many areas to generate their own. This is also the reason for the plain dress and lack of motor vehicles. A very important thing to know about Amish (if you care!) is that there are different kinds- the Old Order is what I (and several others) have described; there is also New Order- they are less conservative and often have things like telephones and electricity (from public source) in their houses. And, re telephones and the Old Order- the great thing about cell phones... is everybody's got one (which they charge while they wait in waiting rooms or drop in at the grain elevator and chat with the locals while they charge their phones! AND, one more thing before I go, the groups vary vastly from one region to the next in the US... What you see in PA is not what you'll see in OH is not what you'll see in WI which is not what you'll see in IA... you get the pic. In fact, in every state, there is an array of 'flavors'...
1 more thing- Weird Al's song 'Amish Paradise' while not accurate at all is a total scream!

Amish teenagers are given the opportunity to go out into the world when they are 18 to make sure that Amish is the life they want to live. Amish use no electricity and shun modern appliances, use of cars, telephone(usually only one in each settlement for emergency only) and their children go to Amish schools where everyone is Amish. They use horse and buggies to go to the store or to church.

Well...
Living among them for so long....
They "choose" to remain "ignorant" -- meaning that they understand a great deal about science and technology, they just choose not to use it.
They are very kindhearted people.
Their suspiciousness is usually validated.
They are capable of forgiving anything, even the unforgiveable.
They don't care what our opinions are of them.
They came to this country, long before it was the United States...that gives them a certain amount of "seniority"...leave them alone.
The fact that they don't vote, or participate in our "democracy" does not mean that they don't have valid viewpoints, or that their viewpoints should not be represented in government.
They do, on occasion, know "true joy". I cannot say that for many other members of society.
I am a Buddhist, but admire them very much.........
Namaste, and Happy Holidays....

They spend a period of their lives enjoying modern conveineces and vices like smoking during their teen years. This is so they know for sure they want to be Amish. It's called Rumspringa .
