Shopping for a freestanding DVD recorder unit today, I noticed a minority of them have huge hard drives.?

What is the purpose of these hard drives? They add about $100 - $200 to the price. How do they improve functionality?

They allow you to records tv shows/movies directly to the hard drive instead of a dvd. The hard drive hold more data than a dvd (80GB or more compare to 4.7GB on dvd) and you can always record shows/movies saved on the hard drive to dvd later on.
