From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Amish are an Anabaptist Christian denomination in the United States and Ontario, Canada that are known for their plain dress and limited use of modern devices such as automobiles and electricity. The Amish separate themselves from mainstream society for religious reasons: they do not join the military, they draw no Social Security, nor do they accept any form of financial assistance from the government, and many avoid insurance.

Most speak a German dialect known as Pennsylvania Dutch (or Pennsylvania German) at home and in church services, and learn English in school. The Amish are divided into separate fellowships consisting of geographical districts or congregations. Each district is fully independent and has its own Ordnung, or set of unwritten rules.

This article primarily discusses the conservative Old Order Amish fellowships that observe strict regulations on dress, behavior, and the use of technology. There are many New Order Amish and Beachy Amish groups that use electricity and automobiles, but still consider themselves Amish.

You live in Indiana and you've never seen Amish people in Wal-Mart? We're surrounded by Amish families where we live. They are always in Wal-Mart. We have an Amish boy who came to live with us because he'd decided to leave the Amish community and go mainstream. He says Amish people need stuff just like we do. Regardless of whether they're strict or not, they still have to buy the items to make what they need like fabric for clothing and such. There aren't many general stores to go to anymore. We do have an Amish run store next door to us, but they don't have all the stuff they need. Wal-Mart has everything and they're really, really inexpensive, so it would be the logical choice for them.

They know what is means to forgive. Three months ago, when Charles Roberts tied and killed the 5 schoolgirls and himself, the families of the Amish community were equally concerned about the murderer's family than their own lost children.

-Some drive.(depends on the district)
-No TV in house
-No buttons on clothes(use hooks and eyes)
-If a single woman isn't(doesn't wish to be) married she must
change white headdress to black
-Men may not shave after they are married
-No mustache allowed
-No work on Sunday; all food is prepared the day before
-"Graven images" are not allowed; no photographs or paintings of people, dolls may only have blank faces
-Tuesdays and Thursdays are usually wedding days
Schools are only taught by young, unmarried women and schooling stops at 8th grade
Don't ask for favors and if you offered to drive them somewhere
they'll gladly accept. It is still a sight to see a plain woman getting
out the back seat of a Camaro that was tricked out.

When I lived in Pennsylvania, most of my neighbors were Amish. They were very neighborly, and quiet and respectful. The best neighbors I ever had.

They are the true rebels. They don't rely on the establishment to help them make it in life. They are self sufficient.
