Depends on what you mean by "safe." There is nothing 100% safe. If you go to sites like:

each antivirus has been reviewed by many people. Those people find out whether the software has glitches, or malware/spyware included.
But, of course, the reviews themselves could be written by the people who wrote the program.
There is no way to know for sure that an antivirus is safe, but if you go with those who are used by most people (Avast, AVG, etc.), you have a very high chance of getting a good product that won't fail you or damage your computer.
Avoid the expensive, big names: they charge you way too much, and their programs are so huge they eat up half of your available memory. They (Norton, McAfee, etc.) are worse than any virus.
