While we are trying to plan our lives...they are already happening. The plans we make try to alter what is destined to happen. There are some things in life we cannot change- no matter how many plans we make.
This can also mean: We spend so much time and energy trying to make plans for our lives that we don't actually take the time to stop and just enjoy living life.

“When life hands you lemons, make lemonade and lemon pie, ... That may sound trite, yet what I mean is that when something happens that takes you down a different road than you had planned, you need to take control of the situation and turn it into something positive. What may look like a catastrophe can end up being a wonderful opportunity.”
Yup, that's it. Life can not be planned. Like so often, people make plans for a trip and get snowed in/out. Of course.. failure to plan is planning to fail. So ... damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I think it means that we get so caught up in planning and preparing that sometimes while we are waiting for what we have planned life is happening and we're missing it. You can make all the plans you want but God has the final say.

While we're busy planning things, life has a habit of sneaking up on you and presenting you with something you hadn't even considered. It can be a great opportunity, a new idea, or even a catastrophe you have to deal with. But life doesn't sit still while you make plans, so keep your eyes open, and be aware of things that may be changing.
Merry Christmas!

While you plan out your life and expect everything to happen the way you pictured it, life goes on usually in a way that is completely unexpected. It just means life doesnt always go the way you want it to.

All of the persons who have answered this question are correct. The original speaker was John Lennon, who said, "Life is what happens while you're making other plans."

We are human, independent of nature. Even though we may speculate about the future and expect things to go a certain way, if we do not carry out with them, other things will happen. Reality will take its course; it does not wait. The world is not ideal, and we must realize that. The tendency to idealize is what holds us back; the ability to adapt is what drives us forward.

That you seldom are aware that THIS is actually life. That this moment is a moment in your life. That THIS is it. People are often to busy dreaming and making plans to really appreciate the moment.
