I work in the retail sector. All year long, I greet people with a smile, ask if I can help them etc and often I am ignored, replied to in a rude manner or treated like crap. Suddenly, Christmas rolls around and everyone is running around (including the miserable SOB's that I have just referred to) and wish everyone a 'Merry Christmas'. Why are people such hypocrites? Christmas comes around and all of a sudden everyone is your best friend? Personally it really ticks me off....you should be that way all year around or not at all.

Not really answering the question, but I just wanted to say thank you for being one of the nice people who works in retail. I always appreciate it. I've never had a retail job, but sometimes I wonder if I'd like it. Not sure if I could handle it, though -- it's a rough job. Don't let the rude customers change you into one of them. Merry Christmas (sincerely :))

I can see your point and it is a valid one. Your profession requires an even keel so to speak. You know that the customer is always right. Even when their being a complete dork towards you . The fact that their in your store, spending money gives them the edge and I think some people like to flaunt that. It's a double edged sword . So far I believe you've managed to bite your tongue which does show character on your part If you want to advance in your career in retail try making your customers feel special so that they look forward to coming back and spending more with you. The reason people are so nice around the holidays is because their trying to get out and be seen by others as being hip or into the shopping buzz. Many people meet for lunch or later for drinks and compare note's. It's a cool thing. There just enjoying themselves, no harm intended. If you seduce those customers of yours in a smart way ,the buzz might be about you.ca ching ca ching merry Christmas

I'm friendly to retail people all year around, since I've been in that position before and I know how hard it can be. Unfortunately, what goes for some customers being rude, ignorant, and given the silent treatment also goes for some people behind the register. I don't want to be anyone's best friend- I would just like a little courtesy and respect extended to me in like manner.

You should be that way all year around. If everyone was, we'd be so much better off. But what are you going to do about it. Good cheer is contagious. So is getting pissed off. If you get pissed off, someone else will reciprocate. If you have good cheer, chances are that someone else will also reciprocate. It is much better to get good cheer back than the latter. You are always going to get some folks who are lousy folks. Ignore that an accentuate the positive. It's your only path to happiness. And Christmas is the time of giving. Give people something of yourself. Give them good cheer.

Merry Christmas and take care.
