In the past few years, my best friend since childhood has started to go through personality changes which can last anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours. While she is generally extraordinarily intelligent, charming, and one of the most genuinely sweet people I know, during these phases she is the epitome of emotional coldness. She says she can't feel anything but scorn towards those closest to her, and acts purposefully to hurt them during these phases. They only come about once a month, and it is usually her boyfriend of 2 years who gets it the worst, even though she is otherwise adamant about how wonderful she thinks he is, and demonstrates it on a daily basis. She is never violent or excessively angry during the phase - just cold, derisive, and cruel. After she "snaps out of it" she apologises and cries, and returns to her sweet self until this happens again.

Has anyone heard of this or witnessed anything like it before??? Please help!

Additionally, she is a 22 year old girl, but has always been extremely mature.

You maybe one of the few people who see this side of her, and if that's true it complicates things.
If she only acts that way with people she can get away with it with, then she is making a concious decision to punish the people she loves. Sure you can take it, but what about when she has children. Will she take this anger out on the smallest and weakest, damn right she will.
Try taping her when she's having an episode, and then have her listen to herself later. I have no idea how this will turn out, but it's something i been meaning to try with my own troubled friend.
She needs to spend a year or two on medication + a bit of counseling and she should stabilize.
Good luck.

Ya, a type of mood swings, pretty severe, I am sure there is some medical diagnosis for it, but I knew someone a year ago, and we talked over the internet alot, she got abused alot as a kid, she would snap on and off sometimes when you stired up certain memories, it was like dealing with a mindfield, sometimes when I did things she would from sweet to cruel, evil, anything, and then never remember a single word.

Yes this is not a new thing by any means she could have a number of disorders and needs to seek medical attention..It could be a hormonal change but also could be the onset of bipolar or allot of mental problems..This is not bad, but does have to be taken care of,You as her friend should try to approach her on this, she must relize something i swrong..Try to get her to see a doctor, it won`t be easy but i am sure watching yoru close friend go threw this is eithier...There are many medicines on the market to help people with disorders. And it may be something as siimple as hormanal changes tha thappen once a mont..Please convince her to get checked..and stand by her...i wish you well

personality disorders don't usually come and go in cycles. it could be hormonal changes and severe pms. a lot of women, including myself at one time, seriously feel mean and evil when the hormones get out of balance during pms episodes. look into natural soy estrogen supplements...and she should also discuss with her doctor...there's no need for her to go through this every month. best of luck to your friend.

New medication or drug abuse...
Humans always say,"I would have never suspected him/her of that!"
