All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free. After you install any of them, make sure you update them to get the full affect.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Spybot, Ewido anti-malware, and Lavisoft Ad-Aware are the free ones that I've been using for a while now. They work great. I put links below.

They don't clutter up the computer with toolbars or unnecessary popups - they just work when you run them. That's all I want.

there is spybot search and destroy http://www.safer-networking.org, adaware by lavasoft http://www.lavasoft.de Also spyware blaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html won't remove spyware but helps prevent it from installing.

I have also used A-squared http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ and microsoft have windows defender http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Windows defender runs at startup and may install the MSN IE toolbar (I can't remember if it does but a few microsoft applications do). Spybot has an optional security feature that informs you of changes to the PC called teatimer. The rest only run when you execute them and install no toolbars or anything

Hey there. I hear you. This site is awesome. http://www.tucows.com/ Some things are free, some things are trial based, but you won't get extra added items. To me, it's one of the best sites out there for software. They always show the most popular item being downloaded and you can read reviews as well before downloading. Good luck. I saw one on there earlier. They probably have a couple to select from just knowing the site.

A good FREE anti-spyware program is Lavasoft's 'Ad-Aware' Free Edition!
You could also give Safer Networking's 'Spy-Bot Search & Destroy' a go too?
Both are free and provide free updates on a regular basis. Both are good entry level FREE anti-spyware programs.
I have added a couple of links below for the FREE downloads!
Good luck & i hope this helps.. ;)

For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............

Pick and choose at least 2 anti-spywares from the list below and alternate scanning with them on a regular basis. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.
