Plymouth is good for families.
St. Louis Park is nice because it's easy access to the city.
Hopkins, Edina, Golden Valley are all great suburbs, too. Also Wayzata and Minnetonka. (There's a lot)

Do you want to live close to downtown Minneapolis? If so, I would recommend the Golden Valley, Hopkins, St. Louis Park areas. These are nice family oriented burbs, super close to the city and still lots of shopping and restaurants etc. I work in SLP and actually live in Robbinsdale (which i don't really recommend, but rent's cheap and its a short drive from the city).
Maple Grove is a nice suburb. Tons of shopping and business there, especially in the Arbor Lakes area. It's not as close to the city, but still a pretty quick drive. Edina is nice too, but more expensive.
It really depends on what you're looking for. Nightlife, shopping, close to work, schools, etc.

Edina is where the rich houses are. Less crime there. Wayzata is okay. But Little Canada is really nice too.
