You will not find any telescope worth your money for under $100. To get an even semi-decent telescope you need at least $200 and to get a decent serious telescope you need at least $400.

To see any detail on the planets with your eyes you will need a telescope with at least 4.5" of aperture meaning you will need a reflector. An 80mm apochromatic refractor with the right camera will produce photos with some planetary detail though.

To get much detail on the planets in either case you will need a VERY steady mount which you will not find with a $200 telescope.

Using a good camera made for astrophotography with zoom features you can take nice images of the moon and a few other things without a telescope but the camera would cost at least $200.

So first learn about telescopes.
Then learn about astrophotography
Then save your money for what you want.

You will need to spend more than $100 for such a telescope. The Moon is easy; any telescope will give you detailed views. The planets are difficult targets because they are so small and you will need a large aperture, high quality telescope costing more than $100. While a 4 inch telescope can show some detail on the planets, most people are disappointed with anything less than an 8 inch telescope for that, which will cost $1,000 or more. Photography requires a very stable, motor driven mounting that will cost more than the telescope itself.

You need to focus on optical quality and mechanical stability. Pay no attention to magnification at all. It is totally unimportant. Magnification is simply a function of the focal length of the eyepiece used, and if you need more you can just buy another eyepiece. But magnification of more than 50 power per inch of aperture will result in a dim, blurry image. It may be large, but it won't show any detail.

The best thing you could do for him would be to get him a membership in a local astronomy club or association. The members would be able to show him many different telescope options and how to use them. Get him a star chart, also so he can learn the constellations. That's really the first step in learning the sky. Whatever you do, do not buy a telescope from Walmart or anyplace similar. You will only get a piece of junk that will discourage him from pursuing his hobby. Unfortunately, you are not going to find a decent telescope for under 100 dollars however, you probably can find binoculars at that price. Again, though, I recommend an astronomy club membership to start with.

Sears has a 3 inch reflector for around 80 dollars. That should
do the trick. I prefer a 4 inch, but those would be beyond your
budget.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and have a nice day.

Thank you very much, while you're up!
