It's absolutely nothing to do with writing on both sides of a disk. A dual layer DVD disc has two layers on it, one at a greater depth than the other ... both of them on the same side of the disc. The discs, themselves, however, are expensive compared to single layered discs.

It's basically a DVD+RW or DVD-RW burner, and the dual layer really makes no difference at all, though it is capable of burning a dual layer disc. A dual layer disc is capable of holding 8.5 GB, whereas a normal disc holds 4.7, thus almost doubling the capacity---that's DUAL layer.

basically a dual layer dvd-rw is a optical drive that is capable of recording double the amount of data of what a dvd disc can do
a normal dvd-rw disc can hold 4.7gb of data so a dual layer can do 9.4gb
however evn if you have a dvd-rw dual layer drive you still need to buy dual layer discs to enable this function
as these discs tend to be still quite expensive, its much cheaper to buy normal dvd-r discs unless you specificly need to use a disc for large amount of data
happy xmas

The dvd drive can write on both sides of the disc. I just bought a new computer, and I have that also. You have to buy disc's that are capable of burning, to both sides of the disc. I used it a couple of times, and it can really hold lots of information. You can use it for writting files, or to backup your system, and you can also write (burn) music on them. After you use it a few times, I think you will really like it. It will tell you, when the first side is finished, then all you have to do, is flip the disc over.. You can burn a regular cd on it also, Good Luck..
